Workshop Description:
During this interactive workshop, participants will learn and share ideas as well as free resources for authentic communication through speaking and reading.  We will also explore the role of grammar in a communicative classroom.  Based on interest survey results, this session will include ideas for Interpersonal Communication tasks for pairs, small groups, and whole class instruction,  Interactive Reading and Listening comprehension tasks using Authentic Cultural Texts,  and introducing grammar in a communicative context.

Speaker Bio

Bridget Yaden, Ph.D., is Professor of Hispanic Studies and Director of the Language Resource Center at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in Tacoma, Washington.  She holds a PhD and MA in Romance Linguistics (UW) and a BA in Spanish (WWU). She began her involvement in language centers during her graduate studies at the University of Washington (1995-1996, Language Learning Center) and has continued this work at PLU since 1996.  Her research interests include online language programs, bilingual education, and world language teacher preparation.  She has served on many professional boards, including ACTFL, NWALL, AATSP Juan de Fuca Chapter, WAFLT, and PNCFL.

Selecting and Adapting Authentic Videos to Maximize your Learning

Time: September 8th 2018, 8:30am – 3:30pm w/ 1 hour lunch break @ 12:30pm (6 hours total)

Joanne Shang teaches Mandarin Chinese at Rye Country Day School in New York, and is professionally focused on student-centered pedagogy, evidence-based proficiency assessment, and instructional technology for 21st Century Learning.

Target Audience: K – 16 Instructors

Location: THO 101 – Thomson Hall, The University of Washington

Cost: Free for CLTA-WA members; $20.00 for non-members                                            (CLTA-WA annual membership fee: $30.00 for July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019)

Description: 
During this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to select and adapt the perfect authentic video clips to maximize the learning outcome through direct hands-on experience using authentic audio-visual materials that they will learn how to source, integrate, and implement into their curriculums. Each teacher will leave with a video resources, as well as a video based lesson or activity that they will create using the skills they learn during the workshop. Teachers will be able to explore using these authentic video materials to design curriculum/activities in Interpretive and Interpersonal Communication tasks for pairs, small groups, and whole class instruction.

Workshop Goal:

  1. To provide participants with a better understanding of what authentic materials are available and how to access them.
  2. To instruct participants in how to qualify and implement video materials with the greatest relevance and benefit to their learning outcomes
  3. To give participants a better understanding of how to integrate these video materials as a means of supplement their curriculum and lessons.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To source relevant, effective, and authentic video materials from a variety of locations.
  2. To develop lesson plans that integrate these video materials into the curricula.
  3. To implement the plans in a variety of classroom instructional activities.

How to Create a Differentiated Instruction Classroom to Minimize Student Distraction

Presenter:
Yea-Jae “Pollyanna” Wang is a certified elementary and secondary public-school teacher with a World Language endorsement in Mandarin and a principal and administrator endorsement. Ms. Wang is currently teaching Chinese at Chief Sealth International High School in Seattle, where she has mentored several Hanban guest teachers and Seattle Public School Startalk teacher candidates. Additionally, Ms. Wang serves as the lead Chinese teacher for her school district. She has extensive experience in developing thematic curricula for Seattle Public Schools.

Target Audience: In-service K-16 and pre-service Chinese language teachers
Target Language: Mandarin Chinese

Cost: Free for CLTA-WA members; $10 for non-CLTA-WA members.                          *Note: This 10-dollar workshop registration fee also includes the CLTA-WA membership. The membership is for September 15, 2018 to June 30, 2019. This offer only applies for the 2018 Spokane workshop.

Workshop Description: 
Every student learns and processes information differently. As teachers, it is our job to help students succeed regardless of these differences and to acknowledge those differences and differentiate our instruction to engage students in the process of learning. In the workshop, participants will learn how to engage students by modifying content, differentiating the ways we teach, and being flexible on how to assess students.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Define and explain what differentiated instruction is
  • Identify essential differentiated principles to implement differentiated instruction in the classroom
  • Learn how to implement differentiated strategies and hands-on examples in their classrooms

Clock Hours:
Participants who attend the entire workshop are eligible for 3 clock hours (partial clock hours cannot be awarded).
