2019 CLTA-WA AGM Recap

This year’s AGM continued a long tradition of reflecting on our growth as a community of Chinese teachers as we look towards the promise of greater growth in the year to come. This year, we were joined by teachers from across the state. Together, we honored the service and excellent leadership given to us by Ms. Zoe Jiang, two time CLTA-WA President, friend, and mentor to many of us. Zoe led us through a reflection of the year’s events and community accomplishments. Afterwards, new President Jeremy Smith took the podium and lead the participants through an exercise in making community connections. Teachers were tasked with making a new teacher connection before leaving the event. Alice Flores graced us with an excellent mini-workshop on her experiences and takeaways from her time at the most recent CLTA national conference. Teachers were reminded of how broad our CLTA-WA community extends and how important it is to take our individual experiences and share them with the greater community. The second mini-workshop was delivered by Jeremy Smith. This workshop was based on the presentation that he and Meitsu Chang-Mendel gave at the ACTFL 2018 conference in New Orleans. The topic of this workshop was Student Choice, Student Voice. Jeremy spoke about the importance of educating students on how to talk about language proficiency and progress to help them better set learning goals and provide feedback on their learning process. In doing so, teachers are further empowered to craft learning experiences that better meet the needs of the class and the individual learner. This year is all about making and deepening connections in our classroom and this event served as just another example of CLTA-WA’s commitment to facilitating opportunities to make these connections possible. Can’t wait to connect with you all at our Summer and Spokane Regional Workshops!
