Happy Spring Festival! One of the benefits for CLTA-WA members is an opportunity to network. If you’re interested in hosting the next networking event, please contact our network coordinator, Meitsu Chuang-Mendel. Presenter’s Biography:

Dr. Rob Darling started his teaching career in an intensive early intervention autism program, then taught early elementary for 6 years. He is currently principal of the state’s largest K-2 school in Selah, WA, housing 850 students and 90 staff members. Along with starting a dual language immersion program in Selah, Dr. Darling also spearheaded the district’s social-emotional learning efforts, adopting the Sanford Harmony program preK-5th grade (in partnership with CityU of Seattle), providing intentional and systematic Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) procedures for assessing the SEL well-being of students and staff on a bi-monthly basis, and creating one of the state’s first SEL teacher specialist positions. He is an adjunct professor for Heritage University and CityU of Seattle, serves on various state-level education advisory boards and task-forces and presents throughout the state as an expert practitioner for SEL and dual language programs.

CLTA-WA 2019 Spring Workshop: Innovative Ideas to Foster 21st Century Minds (April 13, 2019) @ Westside School

Presenter: Ying Jin, ACTFL’s 2018 National Language Teacher of the Year

Target Audience: K – 16 Chinese Instructors

Location: Westside School, 10404 34th Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98146

Cost: Free for CLTA-WA members; $20.00 for non-members                                    (CLTA-WA annual membership fee: $30.00 for July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019)

Description:

This workshop will introduce a series of classroom-proven activities designed to meet the needs of 21st Century Learners. This will be an interactive session featuring student work samples, video demonstrations and tips on how to build a strong and cohesive student-centered learning community. A variety of practical classroom activities along with step-by-step instructions will be shared with the audience. The activities include Quiz Quiz Trade, Ask Ask Trade, Sentence Picture, Running Dictation, just to name a few.

This hands-on workshop will be split into two parts, the first mostly focusing on auditory strategies and the second on literacy strategies. The audience will be asked to actively participate in sample activities and will walk away with ideas that they can easily apply to their own classroom practice.

Speaker Bio:   Ms. Ying Jin (金璎)

Ms. Ying Jin has more than 20 years Chinese language and culture teaching experience in diverse settings, including middle schools, high schools, and colleges in both the U.S. and China. She is currently a teacher of Mandarin Chinese at the Fremont Union High School District in Cupertino, California.

Ms. Jin is a board member of CLASS (Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools) and serves as the chair of National Chinese Honor Society.

Ms. Jin received her MA degree in Instructional Technologies from San Francisco State University, and BA degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Peking University, China. Additionally, Ms. Jin volunteers for numerous educational and cultural organizations in the SF Bay Area.

Ms. Jin received the 2018 Teacher of the Year from ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages), 2017 Teacher of the Year from SWCOLT (The Southwest Conference On Language Teaching), 2016 Teacher Of the Year from CLTA (California Language Teachers Association), 2015 Outstanding Teacher Award from CLTA (California Language Teachers Association) and 50th Annual Murphy Educator of the Year Award in 2014.

Ms. Jin has presented many times in conferences, such as ACTFL, CLTA (California Language Teachers Association), and STARTALK. She enjoys interacting with other teachers and promoting Chinese language teaching in the K-12 realm.
