Startalk Teacher Certification Pre-requisites

Startalk Teacher Certification Pre-requisites

State Requirements:

1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in the U.S. or other country.
2. Passing scores on the WEST B (Washington Educator’s Basic Skills Test) in Reading, Writing and Math (west.nesinc.com).

  • Most find that 5 hours is not enough time to do all three tests.
  • Past test takers recommend signing up for reading and math first and then taking the writing test in a separate session.
  • Substitutions: C-BEST, SAT or ACT scores (see OSPI website)
  1. Startalk Requirement: Passing scores on the world language test: ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPIc) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT). Choose a Startalk language.
  • Sign up for the OPIc if available; it’s more cost effective than asking for an in-person tester.
  • In Washington state, passing is set at Advanced Low.
  1. Note: CityU requires passing one of the following in order to enroll in its alternate route certification program:
  • Either ELL (WEST E 051), plus NES 102 and NES 103.Passing these tests will enable you to teach ELL P-12 and/or elementary grades K-8.
  • Or Special Education (WEST E 070); passing this will enable you to teach SpEd P-12.
  • Or Secondary Math (grades 6-12), NES 304
  • Or Mid Grades Math (grades 5-9), NES 203. The difference is the Mid Grades Math test does not include trigonometry and calculus.
  • Note: Passing NES 203 will enable you to teach math 5th-9thgrades; passing NES 304 will enable you to teach math 6th-12thgrades.

Other endorsements may be added near the end of certification, such as the Designated World Language (E 100) in order for you to teach a Startalk language.

Potential teacher candidates need to start taking the tests as soon as possible because of possibly needing to wait and re-take one or more of the above tests. The waiting period for a re-test is 45 days for the WEST B. And it takes up to six weeks for certain test scores to come in. Test Taking Deadline: May 1, 2019.

2017 CLTA-WA Spokane Fall Workshop Recap

The fall workshop Integrated Performance Instruction and Assessment was led by Mrs. Chungman Gissing and held at Eastern Washington University (EWU) on Saturday, October 28th, 2017. As a lead teacher in summer Startalk program at the University of Hawaii, an IB examiner, and a teacher trainer, Mrs. Gissing brought a wealth of knowledge to share with this year’s participants.

Mrs. Gissing led an engaging and informative workshop that included many valuable hands-on activities. Workshop participants were very happy with the workshop and found the ideas and techniques shared during the session were beneficial. We want to extend our appreciation to the sponsors:  CLTA-WA, the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington, and EWU’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

Her recent publications include the 4th Edition of Integrated Chinese 中文听说读写 (co-authored) and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language: Curriculum Design & Instruction 课程设计与教学实例 (co-edited). The workshop opened with detailed breakdown of how to succeed with developing effective lesson plans. Bi answered questions with specific examples and gave participants hands-on practice. Workshop participants were grouped based on their choices of language standards, such as ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, AP Chinese scoring guidelines, IB Chinese guidelines, textbook guidelines, and requirements set by schools or school districts. The workshop venue that the East Asia Center and the Department of Asian Languages and Literature sponsored was an active learning classroom fully equipped with the highest level of presentation and collaboration technology enabling participants to share multimedia and collaborate in groups or as a whole. Each group chose a topic and worked out an effective lesson plan under the guidance of the presenter.  The workshop finished up with an intense discussion about the lesson plans all groups shared.

Workshop participants found the workshop very useful and effective in increasing their understanding of lesson planning. They would like to explore those ideas that shared at the workshop further in the future. The workshop was well attended by 36 participants, including the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington, Wenqiu Wang.

2017 Spring Workshop & Open House

On March 4th, CLTA-WA hosted a successful 2017 Spring Workshop & Open House.

Shunmei Zhu and Min Wang Laoshi from Naselle Grays River Valley School demonstrated how they used differentiated strategies in whole group mini lesson and small group instruction settings to teach reading and grammar based on student levels and individual needs. Ching-Hsien Shu Laoshi from Cleveland High School also gave a wonderful presentation that focused on the principles and execution of TPRS. She demonstrated her strategies by leading a TPRS session on a chosen topic that follows the steps and command unique to TPRS. CLTA-WA’s advisor, Lotus Perry Laoshi, not only helped with hosting, but presented the history, techniques, almost everything teachers should know about the tea culture.

Thank you very much to our presenters for their generous sharing of expertise and experience. We were also grateful to our participants for their coming and learning together.
